Document Services

What Are Doc Services?

Inkwell offers three electronic services to support your writing—(1) proofreading, (2) editing, and (3) writing coaching. Choose the service tier that best meets your needs. You must PLAN AHEAD. We cannot accommodate last-minute emergencies. Expedited service may be available for a 25% upcharge on a per-case basis.

To be clear, Inkwell does not provide essay writing service. Because it is important for you to learn how to correct your own mistakes and to develop the skills needed for making effective rhetorical choices, tutors do not rewrite your papers. They post comments and make suggestions so that you both retain ownership of the content and control the revision of your paper.

What Does Coaching Include?

Coaching is the most comprehensive document service. It supports the entire writing process or any phase of it from planning to final presentation. As “project manager,” a coach will arrange a consultation to explain the editing process and answer your questions; discuss project requirements, priorities, and due dates; plan and establish a workable timeline to complete the project on schedule; brainstorm ideas; and strategize how to develop and organize those ideas.

In order to allow for turnaround of a project by its due date, you must follow the written schedule agreed on during your initial consultation. That timeline will schedule the three electronic submissions included in a coaching package . . .

  • The 1streading evaluates your paper’s strengths, suggests changes for improvement in its content and structure, and identifies concision techniques and possible text to cut in order to adhere to a word limit. You then revise the paper accordingly.
  • The 2ndreading evaluates style and the success of initial revisions, offering further recommendations. Once you have done your best effort to revise, you submit your paper for a third and final time.
  • The 3rdreading is a proofreading, a brief check for typos and errors in grammar, spelling, mechanics, and format, with suggested corrections for you to approve and make.

Coaching is a good option if you need help managing a project or you are just more comfortable with being fully supported while working on it.

What Does Editing Include?

Editing is a mid-level service. Editors read your paper holistically and analyze its strengths and weaknesses, assessing whether it will effectively meet the goal of an assignment within the targeted word count. Their suggestions focus on how it could be improved by adding, deleting, changing, or rearranging content. Though editors may make some general comments about the mechanics of presentation, their main concern is WHAT the message is and HOW it is communicated. Their suggestions pertain to . . .

  • focus
  • content
  • organization
  • tone

Editing includes a single reading of a paper only, with comments posted one time. No email, phone, or videoconferencing support is included with editing.

Editing is a good option if you have strong organizational, grammatical, and mechanical skills but you want an unbiased perspective on the merits of your draft.

What Does Proofreading Include?

Proofreading is a check of your final draft for mechanical correctness. This service excludes evaluation of a paper’s content, organization, or style, although a proofreader may suggest such service if it seems warranted. Proofreaders provide comments that identify errors in . . .

  • grammar and usage
  • spelling
  • capitalization
  • punctuation
  • diction
  • formatting

Proofreaders merely post comments for you to accept or reject. No email, phone, or videoconferencing support is included with proofreading. Proofreading is a good option if you are a strong writer confident in the merits of your paper’s content, organization, style, and length, but you want another pair of eyes to catch any minor mistakes you might have missed.

What Do Doc Services Cost?

All document services are billed in units that equate to the final maximum word count of a document. The reason charges are calculated on the final length of a paper is to encourage you initially to write until you access good content. Too often when starting a writing project, students stumble around trying to figure out what ideas they want to express. By the time they reach the word limit, therefore, they have generated little good content. By removing any length limitation, we allow time and space to dive deeper into more effective and engaging development of ideas. Later on, all unhelpful wordage can be removed and all the good content kept!

The cost depends on the level of service requested. Fees per 250-word unit are . . .

coaching = $80

editing = $32

proofreading = $16

How Can I Receive Doc Services?

After you are a registered Inkwell student, all you need to do is fill out a Doc Service Request form and agree to Inkwell’s Document Services, Terms & Conditions. When your project is approved for service and as soon as Inkwell receives your payment, your service will begin.
